I’ll be honest. Before theses old fashioned cutout sugar cookies, the last thing I baked was a batch of Oreo-stuffed chocolate chip cookies. These cookies to be precise. Except instead of making the dough to surround the Oreos, I picked up a tub of Tollhouse and called it a day. However, these cutout ones, they’ve made me a believer in made-from-scratch desserts.
I am not big on baking or cooking, but last weekend I figured it was time I cracked open one of my vintage cookbooks and try a treat out. So I went BASIC. As basic as you can go. This old fashioned sugar cookie recipe is literally titled “Cookies” in the “Slovak Catholic Sokals” cookbook my mom recently gave me (see below).
There isn’t even an exact measurement for how much flour to put in! A realization that only occurred to me after the six prior ingredients were incorporated and that incited some baffled cursing, hair pulling and stress-eating of coconut flakes. But that’s the old fashioned way I guess. Back in the 1960s, you were just supposed to know how much flour your standard batch of cutout cookies called for. Today, I know to text my mom.
So with her guidance, I mixed all other ingredients in a big ceramic bowl by hand (always by hand) then scooped in flour by increments of a half cup until I reached what I thought was a cookie dough consistency. This brought me to a whopping 5 and 1/8 cups.
The end results were simple, delicately sweet sugar cookies. They were dense and crunchy, like homemade animal crackers and just as snackable. The flavor overall is very subtle but so, so comforting. Just like old fashioned cutout cookies should be.
The recipe called for sprinkling chunks of apple, coconut, sugar and cinnamon into the dough, but I put some on top, well, because it’s prettier. I’ll be honest, though. These aren’t the stuff of Pinterest chocolate-covered daydreams. They are humble little hunks of dough best paired with chamomile tea, a blanket, and some crackling vinyl. But before the holiday excitement gets into full swing, a quiet little old fashioned cutout cookie is just what I needed. I’m curious if you feel the same 🙂
